Desmosomes are cell-cell junctions between epithelial,nmyocardial and certain other cell types. Desmoglein 1 is ancalcium-binding transmembrane glycoprotein component of desmosomesnin vertebrate epithelial cells. Currently, three desmogleinnsubfamily members have been identified and all are members of thencadherin cell adhesion molecule superfamily. These desmoglein genenfamily members are located in a cluster on chromosome 18. Thenprotein encoded by this gene has been identified as the autoantigennof the autoimmune skin blistering disease pemphigus foliaceus.
