This gene encodes the fifth largest subunit of RNAnpolymerase II, the polymerase responsible for synthesizingnmessenger RNA in eukaryotes. This subunit is shared by the otherntwo DNA-directed RNA polymerases and is present in two-fold molarnexcess over the other polymerase subunits. An interaction betweennthis subunit and a hepatitis virus transactivating protein has beenndemonstrated, suggesting that interaction between transcriptionalnactivators and the polymerase can occur through this subunit.
