The Golgi apparatus, which participates in glycosylationnand transport of proteins and lipids in the secretory pathway,nconsists of a series of stacked cisternae (flattened membranensacs). Interactions between the Golgi and microtubules are thoughtnto be important for the reorganization of the Golgi after itnfragments during mitosis. This gene encodes one of the golgins, anfamily of proteins localized to the Golgi. This protein is ancoiled-coil membrane protein that has been postulated to play anrole in vesicle tethering and docking. Translocations involvingnthis gene and the ret proto-oncogene have been found in tumorntissues; the chimeric sequences have been designated RET-II andnPTC5.
