The human MDM4 gene, which plays a role in apoptosis, nencodes a 490-amino acid protein containing a RING finger domainnand a putative nuclear localization signal. The MDM4 putativennuclear localization signal, which all Mdm proteins contain, isnlocated in the C-terminal region of the protein. The mRNA isnexpressed at a high level in thymus and at lower levels in allnother tissues tested. MDM4 protein produced by in vitro translationninteracts with p53 via a binding domain located in the N-terminalnregion of the MDM4 protein. MDM4 shows significant structuralnsimilarity to p53-binding protein MDM2. Two transcript variants, none protein-coding and the other likely not to be protein-coding,nhave been found for this gene.
