This gene encodes the soluble mannose-binding lectin ornmannose-binding protein found in serum. The protein encoded belongsnto the collectin family and is an important element in the innatenimmune system. The protein recognizes mannose andnN-acetylglucosamine on many microorganisms, and is capable ofnactivating the classical complement pathway. Deficiencies of thisngene have been associated with susceptibility to autoimmune andninfectious diseases.
