The product of this gene is an essential component of thenDNA damage checkpoint, and binds to single-stranded DNA coated withnreplication protein A that accumulates at sites of DNA damage. Thenencoded protein interacts with the ataxia telangiectasia and Rad3nrelated protein, a checkpoint kinase, resulting in accumulation ofnthe kinase at intranuclear foci induced by DNA damage. Multiplentranscript variants encoding different isoforms have been found fornthis gene.
