This gene encodes a component of the heteromeric ESCRT-IIIncomplex (Endosomal Sorting Complex Required for Transport III) thatnfunctions in the recycling or degradation of cell surfacenreceptors. ESCRT-III functions in the concentration andninvagination of ubiquitinated endosomal cargos into intralumenalnvesicles. The protein encoded by this gene is found as a monomer innthe cytosol or as an oligomer in ESCRT-III complexes on endosomalnmembranes. It is expressed in neurons of all major regions of thenbrain. Mutations in this gene result in one form of familialnfrontotemporal lobar degeneration.
