The encoded protein isnubiquitously expressed in human tissues, membrane-bound, and maynact as a cellular antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidativenstress. Hydrolytic activity against acylhomoserine lactones,nimportant bacterial quorum-sensing mediators, suggests the encodednprotein may also play a role in defense responses to pathogenicnbacteria. Mutations in this gene may be associated with vascularndisease and a number of quantitative phenotypes related tondiabetes.
