Corticotropin-releasing hormone is a potent stimulator ofnsynthesis and secretion of preopiomelanocortin-derived peptides.nAlthough CRH concentrations in the human peripheral circulation arennormally low, they increase throughout pregnancy and fall rapidlynafter parturition. Maternal plasma CRH probably originates from thenplacenta. Human plasma contains a CRH-binding protein whichninactivates CRH and which may prevent inappropriatenpituitary-adrenal stimulation in pregnancy.
