The protein encoded by this gene converts UDP-glucose tonUDP-glucuronate and thereby participates in the biosynthesis ofnglycosaminoglycans such as hyaluronan, chondroitin sulfate, andnheparan sulfate. These glycosylated compounds are common componentsnof the extracellular matrix and likely play roles in signalntransduction, cell migration, and cancer growth and metastasis. Thenexpression of this gene is up-regulated by transforming growthnfactor beta and down-regulated by hypoxia. Alternative splicingnresults in multiple transcript variants.
