This gene encodes a mitochondrial NAD-dependent malicnenzyme, a homotetrameric protein, that catalyzes the oxidativendecarboxylation of malate to pyruvate. It had previously beennweakly linked to a syndrome known as Friedreich ataxia that hasnsince been shown to be the result of mutation in a completelyndifferent gene. Certain single-nucleotide polymorphism haplotypesnof this gene have been shown to increase the risk for idiopathicngeneralized epilepsy.
