This gene encodes an adhesive junction associated proteinnof the armadillo/beta-catenin superfamily and is implicated innbrain and eye development and cancer formation. The protein encodednby this gene promotes the disruption of E-cadherin based adherensnjunction to favor cell spreading upon stimulation by hepatocytengrowth factor. This gene is overexpressed in prostatenadenocarcinomas and is associated with decreased expression ofntumor suppressor E-cadherin in this tissue. This gene resides in anregion of the short arm of chromosome 5 that is deleted in Cri dunChat syndrome.
