This gene encodes a protein required for synthesis ofnN-acetylglucosaminyl phosphatidylinositol (GlcNAc-PI), the firstnintermediate in the biosynthetic pathway of GPI anchor. The GPInanchor is a glycolipid found on many blood cells and which servesnto anchor proteins to the cell surface. Paroxysmal nocturnalnhemoglobinuria, an acquired hematologic disorder, has been shown tonresult from mutations in this gene. Alternate splice variants havenbeen characterized.
