This gene is one of several genes encodingnpulmonary-surfactant associated proteins (SFTPA) located onnchromosome 10. Mutations in this gene and a highly similar genenlocated nearby, which affect the highly conserved carbohydratenrecognition domain, are associated with idiopathic pulmonarynfibrosis. The current version of the assembly displays only ansingle centromeric SFTPA gene pair rather than the two gene pairsnshown in the previous assembly which were thought to have resultednfrom a duplication.
