The CD8 antigen is a cell surface glycoprotein found onnmost cytotoxic T lymphocytes that mediates efficient cell-cellninteractions within the immune system. The CD8 antigen, acting as ancoreceptor, and the T-cell receptor on the T lymphocyte recognizenantigens displayed by an antigen presenting cell (APC) in thencontext of class I MHC molecules. The functional coreceptor isneither a homodimer composed of two alpha chains, or a heterodimerncomposed of one alpha and one beta chain. Both alpha and betanchains share significant homology to immunoglobulin variable lightnchains. This gene encodes the CD8 beta chain isoforms. Multiplenalternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinctnmembrane associated or secreted isoforms have been described. Anpseudogene, also located on chromosome 2, has been identified.
