This gene encodes a member of the galectin family ofncarbohydrate binding proteins. Members of this protein family havenan affinity for beta-galactosides. The encoded protein isncharacterized by an N-terminal proline-rich tandem repeat domainnand a single C-terminal carbohydrate recognition domain. Thisnprotein can self-associate through the N-terminal domain allowingnit to bind to multivalent saccharide ligands. This proteinnlocalizes to the extracellular matrix, the cytoplasm and thennucleus. This protein plays a role in numerous cellular functionsnincluding apoptosis, innate immunity, cell adhesion and T-cellnregulation. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcriptnvariants.
