Keratins are intermediate filament proteins responsiblenfor the structural integrity of epithelial cells and are subdividedninto epithelial keratins and hair keratins. This gene encodes anprotein that is expressed in the inner root sheath of hairnfollicles. The type II keratins are clustered in a region ofnchromosome 12q13.
