This gene encodes a highly conserved, putativentransmembrane protein. A mutation in the mouse ortholog of thisngene results in homeotic, posterior-to-anterior transformations ofnthe axial skeleton which are similar to the phenotype of mousenhomeobox C8 gene mutants. This gene is proposed to functionndownstream of homeobox C8 to transduce extracellular patterningninformation during axial skeleton development. An alternativelynspliced transcript variant encoding a substantially differentnisoform has been described, but its biological validity has notnbeen determined.
