The protein encoded by this gene is a glycoprotein,nbelonging to the pentraxin family of proteins, which has ancharacteristic pentameric organization. These family members havenconsiderable sequence homology which is thought to be the result ofngene duplication. The binding of the encoded protein to proteins innthe pathological amyloid cross-beta fold suggests its possible rolenas a chaperone. This protein is also thought to control thendegradation of chromatin. It has been demonstrated that thisnprotein binds to apoptotic cells at an early stage, which raisesnthe possibility that it is involved in dealing with apoptotic cellsnin vivo.
