This gene encodes a member of the serpin superfamily ofnserine proteinase inhibitors. The protein is primarily secreted bynaxons in the brain, and preferentially reacts with and inhibitsntissue-type plasminogen activator. It is thought to play a role innthe regulation of axonal growth and the development of synapticnplasticity. Mutations in this gene result in familialnencephalopathy with neuroserpin inclusion bodies (FENIB), which isna dominantly inherited form of familial encephalopathy and epilepsyncharacterized by the accumulation of mutant neuroserpin polymers.nMultiple alternatively spliced variants, encoding the same protein,nhave been identified.
