This gene encodes the enzyme responsible for formation ofnthe blood group I antigen. The i and I antigens are distinguishednby linear and branched poly-N-acetyllactosaminoglycans,nrespectively. The encoded protein is the I-branching enzyme, anbeta-1,6-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase responsible for thenconversion of fetal i antigen to adult I antigen in erythrocytesnduring embryonic development. Mutations in this gene have beennassociated with adult i blood group phenotype. Alternativelynspliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have beenndescribed.
