- This gene encodes a member of the claudin family. Claudinsnare integral membrane proteins and components of tight junctionnstrands. Tight junction strands serve as a physical barrier tonprevent solutes and water from passing freely through thenparacellular space between epithelial or endothelial cell sheets,nand also play critical roles in maintaining cell polarity andnsignal transductions. Differential expression of this gene has beennobserved in different types of malignancies, including breastncancer, ovarian cancer, hepatocellular carcinomas, urinary tumors,nprostate cancer, lung cancer, head and neck cancers, thyroidncarcinomas, etc.. Alternatively spliced transcript variantsnencoding different isoforms have been found.
