The extensive family of COL gene products(collagens) iscomposed ofseveral chain types, including fibril-forming interstitialcollagens(typesI, II, III and V) and basement membrane collagens(type IV), each type containing multiple isoforms. Collagens are fibrous, extracellularmatrix proteinswith high tensile strength and are themajorcomponents ofconnective tissue,such astendons and cartilage. Allcollagenscontain a triple helix domain and frequentlyshow lateralself-association in order to formcomplexconnective tissues. Several collagens also play a role in cell adhesion, important formaintaining normal tissue architecture and function.
