Levetiracetam is a second generation antiepileptic compound used to prevent convulsions in a variety of settings. It binds the synaptic vesicle protein SV2A (pIC50 = 5.7), presumably altering vesicle exocytosis. Presumably through this mechanism, levetiracetam alters the metabolism and turnover of γ-aminobutyric acid in the brain. It can also suppress the processing of amyloid beta (Aβ) precursor protein to Aβ40 and Aβ42, an important process in Alzheimer’s disease. Levetiracetam has been reported to elicit diverse psychotropic effects.
