Corey aldehyde is a versatile, hydroxy-lactone intermediate for the synthesis of prostaglandins and prostaglandin analogs. Prostaglandin derivatives with modifications in the .alpha. chain, the .omega. chain, or both, are readily accessible from this general intermediate.
