Acetyl-Coenzyme A acetyltransferase 1 （ACAT1） is a mitochondrial enzyme that catalyzes the formation of cholesterol esters from cholesterol and long chain fatty acyl-coenzyme A. ACAT1 may play an important role in the development of atherosclerosis due to cholesterol buildup in macrophage.
