Atractyloside is a natural heteroglucoside produced in some plants, including A. gummifera.{26918} It blocks mitochondrial ADP/ATP translocases, which catalyze the exchange of cytoplasmic ADP with mitochondrial ATP across the mitochondrial inner membrane.{26918,26919} This results in inhibition of oxidative phosphorylation. Atractyloside binds with high affinity (Kd in the nanomolar range) to carrier sites on ADP/ATP translocases that are accessible from the intermembrane space.{26918} Atractyloside also blocks the transport of phosphoenolpyruvate and pyrophosphate by ADP/ATP translocases.{26919}
