异丙肾上腺素类化合物是一组多样化的天然产物，是所有细胞中的必需成分。异戊二烯类化合物由简单的前体异戊烯基二磷酸（IPP）和二甲基烯丙基二磷酸（DMAPP）生物合成。真核生物、真菌和一些革兰氏阳性细菌通过甲羟戊酸（MVA）途径产生IPP，而革兰氏阴性菌和一些革兰氏阴性菌则利用非甲羟戊酸钠或2-C-甲基-D-赤藓糖醇-4-磷酸（MEP）途径。2Z，6Z法尼烷基二磷酸是由Z-Farnesyl二磷酸合酶（结核分枝杆菌）从橙花酰二磷酸合成的。它不是蛋白质法尼酰基转移酶的底物。
